MILITARY TIMES  -  REMEMBER THEM: COMBAT VETERANS SHARE TRIBUTES TO THEIR FALLEN FRIENDS - May 2017
"For civilians, Memorial Day has become the gateway to summer, a cookout holiday. But in the military world, it remains a deeply observed day of remembrance for those who died fighting our country’s battles.  This year, as the holiday approached, I sought out veterans to write a one-sentence tribute in honor of a friend killed in combat."

NPR'S ON BEING:  THE UNSEEN BURDEN OF A VETERAN'S GRIEF - May 2017
"Until I worked as a (civilian) counselor on military bases, I didn’t grasp the real meaning of Memorial Day. While I could have rattled off some school-learned platitude about the holiday’s purpose, I hadn’t experienced the somber quietude, the poignant memorial services, the pristinely-held memories of combat brothers and sisters."

VETERANS WRITING PROJECT REVIEW OF THE HONOR WAS MINE - May 2017
"There is one civilian who has devoted the time, effort – and yes, risk – to move beyond the stereotypes about what it means to serve, and in doing so has written a moving and insightful book on the challenges and rewards of contemporary military life. In The Honor Was Mine: A Look Inside the Struggles of Military Veterans, author and therapist Elizabeth Heaney, MA, LPC, walks us through her personal journey from vaguely sympathetic outsider to deeply empathetic insider."

MILITARY WRITERS SOCIETY OF AMERICA REVIEW OF THE HONOR WAS MINE - May 2017
"This book is well written.  As the spouse of a 20-year veteran and a caseworker for the American Red Cross, many of these stories hit home for me.  I was brought to tears at several points in the book—a soldier trying to come to grips with his buddy’s death; a young private holding his child for the first time; the care a fallen soldier’s possessions receive; the excitement of a small child seeing her father after a year . . . "

Sept. 7, 2016 - WUNC, The State of Things Interview - wcqs.org/post/honor-was-mine

Therapist Elizabeth Heaney left her private practice to participate in a Defense Department initiative that offers free, confidential counseling to combat veterans and their families. Despite more than 30 years of counseling experience, she realized that her military clients were unlike any patients she’d met before. She learned to let go of preconceived notions of the military and to adopt new ways to forge relationships with her tight-lipped clients. Gradually the stories of war, loss and re-adjustment to civilian life came tumbling out. Host Frank Stasio speaks with therapist and author Elizabeth Heaney about the deep perspective on veterans and military life she developed while working as a counselor to military service members and their families.
